Your skill, experience and intelligence is what gets you ahead in business. Of this there can be no denying. However, it’s often how you are “perceived” that counts almost as much. The way people think of you affects how they view you as a businessman and they will often follow their first impressions. How can a nice business tuxedo work to your advantage?
We often hear how important first impressions are, and it is quite true in your everyday contacts in your business. Undoing a bad first impression can take time. You will be at a disadvantage, coming from behind in your business relationship.
This is not necessary. You would have been much more effective in your presentation if you had just been more appropriately dressed, exuding self-confidence and success. You would start out with the perception that you were a winner, instead.
This may seem a little over the top. It’s not. Companies spend huge amounts of money employing psychologists and consultants to tell them exactly what you have just read.
Imagine if you had to make a presentation to prospective clients. What would they take more seriously? Someone dressed in a jacket and pants, or someone dressed immaculately in a fine quality business tuxedo?
Your appearance doesn’t simply reflect upon you. It also says a lot about the company you represent and how they expect to do business.
A good business tuxedo is essentially a power suit.
There’s no secret to power dressing. The ensemble makes a loud statement in it’s simplicity and consists of a black woolen tuxedo, single breasted. The shirt is always pure white, with any collar buttons buttoned down. The tie is plain black or very dark blue, and the shoes are plain black patent leather.
There should be little, if any, variation from this combination. One example might be to go for a dark blue tux, tie, and shoes. However, you must never vary the shirt. It must always be white with a button down collar. Your shoes, tie and suit must always be of the same color. Don’t mix black and blue.
